I bought this book after watching the Revolution OS DVD last year, which obviously made me become more interested in the open source community. The book is a collection of essays that cover technologies like Linux, Apache and Perl. To be honest I didn’t get much out of it. I use open source software but I am not proficient enough in the main languages used to be able to change the code itself.
The term ‘hacker’ is used throughout which I always thought was someone who hacked into computer systems. Not so, that would be a ‘cracker’. A ‘hacker’ is someone who debugs, enhances and generally writes computer programs. The section on How to become a Hacker has this question and answer:
I’m having problems with my Windows software. Will you help me?
